Our trip to Antarctica has produced penguin fever! Luckily the local fabric shop had some penguin fabric to make pot holders, which I traditionally give for  Christmas. See a tutorial about making my style of pot holder here. I picked fabric scraps from my stash that reminded me of the Antarctic landscape, including a dark purple and blue Mari Mekko design I’ve had forever.
Old cotton mattress pads work well for the padding.
Striped sear sucker fabric cut on the bias finishes the outside edge.
It’s time to wrap them in the penguin wrapping paper I found at the super market. Merry Christmas!
What great gifts. I love penguins! When I was a child, my favorite book was Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Have you read that book? Enjoy the holidays.

Oh, yes, I read Mr. Poppers Penguins, too. The recent movie based on the book leaves much to be desired.
myslef Thanks you for this! I love your mix of fabrics. I’m a bit pattern crazy and appreciate when others put unexpected things together so successfully. We too had penguin wrapping paper, but alas, no snow in Maryland. We’ll have to return to Poland (on Thursday) for that! Thanks for posting photos of your trip! Love your potholders! I’m partial to penguin fabric because my brother loves all things penguin so will use your idea for these potholders for next year (for my brother and his family). What is the name of the penguin fabric and who designed it and for what company? AT what shop did you buy it? Actually, if you know the first info that’s more than enough. Very cute!!!!
The fabric is called Penguin Happy Holidays and it was purchased at the Fabric Corner in Falmouth, MA.
Thank you so much, Salley, for posting the information for me. Much appreciated!!! Will search for it. Happy New Year! Cate
Have 2 yards coming to me soon. THANKS AGAIN! Just googled it and found some. The batiks are very effective with it……will look for those later. Plan to make some for my brother & his family for next Christmas!
